Project Suraksha: Redefining Preventive Healthcare in India

Project Suraksha is GAIMS’s flagship pan-India public health initiative, pioneering a student-led movement in preventive healthcare, early detection, and health education. Reaching 15,000+ individuals across schools, rural communities, and urban centres, the initiative takes healthcare beyond hospital walls and into the communities that need it most.

At the heart of this mission is Project Suraksha’s national HPV vaccine awareness campaign, a hybrid physical and digital initiative led by GAIMS in collaboration with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) and the AAPI India Foundation. Launched on 14 January 2025 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, the campaign works to address one of India’s most preventable public health challenges—cervical cancer—through awareness, prevention, and informed action.

Cancer Awareness & Prevention

We lead nationwide campaigns aimed at addressing stigma surrounding women’s health and promoting evidence-based preventive practices. Our student-led teams engage communities through structured education on breast self-examination, cervical cancer risk factors, and the critical role of HPV vaccination in reducing disease burden.

Community Camps

We conduct on-ground awareness camps across diverse settings, ensuring direct community engagement. Our volunteers actively interact with adolescent populations, creating safe, informative spaces to discuss health, hygiene, and preventive practices.

Community Sensitization

From empowering school students to educating mothers, our approach focuses on translating complex medical concepts into clear, actionable health knowledge. Through culturally sensitive communication, we enable communities to make informed decisions that can significantly impact long-term health outcomes.

The Volunteer Experience

Beyond its significant community impact, leading a Project Suraksha drive offers a transformative learning experience that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical practice. Volunteers gain hands-on exposure to delivering healthcare in dynamic, resource-variable settings.

Conducting focused physical examinations in high-volume camp environments and directly counselling diverse populations enhances clinical acumen, decision-making speed, and communication skills—competencies that are integral to effective internship training and future medical practice.
